"Hm..." The features of his face soften into a thoughtful look. "You don't get along well with you family, huh?" he asked, knowing a bit of how that felt. The roads he had been walking felt more of a home to him than back at his house, where he is bombarded with questions of his performance at work. Not exactly a wonderful "welcome home".

"Not really.." She controlled her expression, forcing her mouth into a smirk instead of a sad look. She'd never let her real emotions seep through. Never. Especially not in this place, the desert, or they'd stick to every single grain of sand and make her miserable whenever she returned, even if she was in the best of moods (which was rare). "I just don't like them much. They mean well, I guess, but even the people who mean well most in the world don't end up helping." She gave a shrug. "So no, I don't.. what about you?

Riven shrugged. "I got along better with them before my father died." What a wonderful thing to have brought up. His thoughtful look turned to one with a mix of emotions: Sadness, anger, longing. There were too many to figure out all of them. "Things change a lot when a part of your life style gets messed up." Riven forced his face to take on a neutral emotion before he gazed at her again.

"Oh.." was all Carmen could say, surprising herself by looking at Rivenborn with sympathy. "That really sucks.." It was basically the only speech she remembered how to use at this point.

Again, Riven shrugged. "It's not unusual by this point." I suppose standing in a desert talking to a stranger isn't unusual, either, Riv, snorted his mind. He ignored it and gave Carmen another smile. Something poked at his brain, a question. "But don't you have any friends that you hang out with?"

She sent a silent command to her eyes, impelling them to stick to his face. If she looked away, she'd end up seeming so stupid. "Uh.. not really," she muttered in embarassment, ending up gazing at the ground after all. "None of the people I know of really like me much," she admitted without turning her orbs upwards.

Riven's voids widened, the bright verdant in his left eye starting to engulf the midnight blue that made up his eyes, like it always did when he was surprised by something. He actually felt quite nosy when he inquired, "What? But... why? You don't seem cruel or unattractive..." Riven shut his mouth fast, earning his left eye to become completely green. It began turning this colour only on a few occasions: shock, embarrassment, and irritability. Otherwise, it was just a diagonal line on his iris.

Carmen's blindingly blue eyes widened as his words registered in her brain and bounced around in her eardrums, repeating themselves. She only managed a nervous, twittery little laugh and a "Well, life is almost as unfair as a rigged horse race..", and even then, she was only vaguely aware of her [somewhat odd] words. Her mind was racing and her heart was beating at what had to be 200 beats per second. He doesn't think me rude like most adults do, or fat or ugly or weird like people my age do.. The thought was almost inspiring.

"Yeah, sure, let's go with that." He rubbed the back of his head with his right hand again, grinning nervously as his orbs darted toward the sky a moment. Smooth, Riv, she's sure to know your thoughts now. You're a regular chip off the old block, his mind drawled sarcastically. It didn't phase Riven. He knew he had made a mistake and had let his heart drip onto his words as they spilled forth. The main question for him was what she was going to do now that the little secret was out.

A beeping noise interrupted Carmen's thoughts, and she grabbed for her mp3 player, staring at the screen. A second later, she moaned. "Out of batteries for good.." Well, this was certainly good timing. "But I had it turned off.." she mused, but then sighed and dropped the device on the ground. "No use carrying that around anymore."

Riven cocked an eyebrow. "Can't you get a new battery for it, or charge it?" he questioned, looking at it. Riven himself had never had one. It had been a struggle to get food on the table after his father left. Well, for him it wouldn't have been. He could have. But he couldn't let it be known he had stashed money away. In his household, you don't do that. In his mind, you did.

She shook her head sadly, staring down at the little thing that lay in the sand as though it had abandoned her. "No, this is unfortunately the type that works for a few years and then the battery is exhausted." She gave a sigh and looked up. "It's about time for me to strive for a job anyway.. but I'll need a new one.." She couldn't express how important music was to her.

"Oh..." Riven didn't make comment on her "getting a job" words. Actually, they reminded him of the job he would be having to go back to soon. Mechanics. It wasn't a wonderful career, and he was looking for a new one that didn't involve oil being squirted in his face. "Are you going to head back now?" He didn't know what he planned to accomplish with knowing the answer, but he had asked.

She shook her head, directing her gaze to the green dome above them again. "Nah, I'll probably stay a little longer." She looked at him. "But you can go back if you want.." You don't want him to leave, though, do you, Carmen? You want him to stay and talk longer. Her mind said. And it was basically true, so Carmen didn't retaliate.

"There's not much to do when I go back," Riven admitted. "Except work, and trying to avoid the people of my household." Nice excuse, snickered the voice within him. Maybe she'll see through it and realize you're really falling for her. That voice was getting irritating, and ignoring it wasn't really helping. He doubted yelling at it would, either.
