"You sound like me.." she said, shaking her head slightly. Then she questioned, "What work?" She didn't want to be nosy, but if she didn't ask something, it seemed like all they'd be doing was just standing there awkwardly. May as well talk.

He lifted his shoulders in a shrug. "Right now I work as a mechanic, I'm trying to find a better job, though. I might go into the air force next year." Riven was rattling it off as if it were nothing to be talking. If only that were the case. He was nervous still, and his left eye was still half verdant.

"Hmm," she said in an interested manner, though some awkwardness still clung to her. "That could be a good idea." Carmen herself had no idea what she wanted to do with her life. She lived on a day-by-day schedule: survive school, go home, get away from family as quickly as possible. She wasn't the type to plan ahead.

"What about you, Carmen?" he asked with a tilted head. "What do you do in your life?" His mouth was starting to catch sand and dust again, but he hadn't started coughing yet. It tasted horrible in his mouth, but he wasn't going to spit it out in front of her. He was still paranoid of what her thoughts on him were.

She gave him a lopsided little scowl. "Not much. I guess it's pretty easy to tell exactly how much I do in a day." She crossed her arms and reminded herself that Rivenborn wasn't making fun of her like others had when they asked her a question like that. "I guess I'm still deciding what I want to do," she said hastily, an apologetic tone to her voice.

Riven watched her, sort of subconsciously analyzing how she acted and moved. He got the impression she had been the source of a lot of attention before... a lot of bad attention. Being teased was his guess, but he wasn't going to ask. "Perhaps you can try your hand at singing," he suggested, gazing were the little mp3 player had been almost completely covered in sand.

A geniune smile appeared on Carmen's mouth, though she tried to hide it by gazing shyly at the sand. "Yeah, actually, I already do.. and I love it. That's why I was upset about my mp3 player breaking. It's taught me, in a way, because it's the only practice tool I have." She sighed. "But there's not really a career in that.. I'm not the type of singer you'd expect, like.. I dunno.. Avril Lavigne or Hilary Duff or some other whore like that.. I've got a different style and I wouldn't change, even if a new concept could get me rich."

"What kind of music was it that you were listening too?" he asked, interested to know. The heat of the desert was starting to fade, though it hadn't been all that hot when he had started out into it. He imagined it was getting late, though and wondered if Carmen should be getting home sometime soon.

She pushed some of her hair behind her ear and smiled; whenever she was speaking about music, she always felt wonderfully confident and proud, like she was beautiful and amazing and talented and the best person in the world, even though she knew she was far from that. "Well, before you came I was listening to The Analyst, by Soilwork, and when I saw you I was just beginning Machtkampf, by Arch Enemy, if you are familiar with any of those names." Most people who asked her what she listened to were even more confused when they walked away than before they asked.

"I've heard some of Arch Enemy's work, but not Soilwork," he told her. "You have quite different tastes. I have yet to meet someone-- a woman, actually-- who liked metal. Most of the ones I have met listen to love songs and fawn over themselves in front of their mirrors." His voice took on a sort of distasteful pitch when he spoke of the other girls he had met in his years. Each and every one of them seemed to be stuck on themselves. His older brother had a girlfriend like that. But he pushed that thought aside, trying to keep out of his well of hate.

"Yeah, Soilwork is a little more obscure," Carmen said with a nod. "Not many have heard of them, which isn't really fair. I like 'em a lot." She smiled slightly at the last part of his sentence. "That pretty much sums up most of the girls I know, and seeings as I hate that.. well, we don't get along so well."
She thought for a moment, revealing, "One of the things I like about Arch Enemy is how Ms Gossow can take a topic as ordinary as a breakup- so it's sort of a love song- and turn it into something cool and appealing. I love her way with words.. and I hope to get a voice like hers someday," she finished with a small smile.

"Maybe you will," he said, flashing his most encouraging grin at her. "It's not impossible." The sky overhead was getting darker as the day waned, and darkness wasn't what they needed in this desert. "It's getting late," he said. "We should get back before there's no light left."

She nodded, smiling, though inside she knew that his words were hollow. They had to be. Carmen didn't think she had much of a future, even if Riv ('Since when do you call him that?') disagreed. Making herself concentrate, she said, "Yeah, let's go."

Walking with her back toward the town nearby, Riven wondered what would happen once they departed. Would they see each other again? He hoped so. There was something he needed to give to her tomorrow. Well, if he could get out of his house without being caught, that was.

Carmen stopped in front of her house. She eyed the window, which was dark, and wondered if anyone was even home. She sighed and turned to Riv. "Will.. will I see you again?" she half-stammered. It sounded so weird to her ears, but it was too late to take anything back. Besides, she was ardent to stay in touch with him.
