"A wormwolf," Rian thought in response to Rafe's unsuccessful attempt to transform into a worm. "That'd be a sight to see."
Rian's smile slipped off his face. "Oh..." he said quietly. "Well... we all do stupid things in our lifetimes... every day we do countless dumb things. But..." He paused and couldn't really find words for the next thing he wanted to say. He settled on inquiring gently, "Why did you two split up?"

Rafe couldn't help but chuckle at his own reason. "I was too much for her to deal with, always running off for a mid-morning run, midnight run, you name it. She eventually said it'd be easier to keep people from be suspicious or finding out if we split up. And so, here I am," he explained, holding out his arms, though there was more to the story than that. Screw ups, near exposures, and many others.
"Sorry the worm thing didn't work, by the way. Maybe if I practice I'll be able to at least turn into a sparrow," he jested, grinning.

Rian did not smile. For a child of ten, he was much more sensitive than you'd expect. "Maybe she was right," he said quietly, "but I don't think family is meant to be split up. I hope you find her again soon, Rafe."
He was certainly able to hide his hurt well, but... he felt it. Rian was sure that he did. Deep down, didn't everyone feel the pain of the past, even if they tried to erase it from the banks of their memories?

Rafe looked down, his heart heavy with remembrance. "She left the area to go down south a while back ago. There were times I'd glimpse her on the streets around here now and then, in some of the towns and villages, but they say she started traveling south." With a light lift and fall of his shoulders, he added, "Perhaps I'll go looking for her someday, but I think she needs space after all the rough times being with me caused."
Then trying to get off the subject, he forced a grin only his face. "Let's not go into the past, though. I'm sure she's fine, and it wouldn't help to go into a depression over not having her with me."

After a moment of decision, Rian gave a shrug and a slightly reluctant nod. What was he, Rafe's mother? It wasn't his task to make sure that Rafe was always happy. Besides, there wasn't exactly much that Rian could do about Rafe's sister leaving. He didn't even know her.
"What about your parents?" he questioned, hoping that this, too, was not a sore topic. That is one thing we always have to be wary about when meeting new people; the things that bother them and the things that they enjoy conversing about.

Giving a tiny sigh, Rafe admitted, "I was dispatched from my pack for questioning the authority of my father. He had declared war against a neighboring pack to expand territory, and I told him it was foolish to kill them over just a tiny patch of land, and he told me to get out. The others were with him and it was either leave or die."
Yet, within his story, a light smile came to his lips. The memory, sweet and clear, was soothing. "My mother told the Guardian group to back off, and my sister came with me to the city. You know the rest after that." The expression on his lips did not change, and his eyes seemed far off and thoughtful. It had been a long time since he thought about his mother. A very long time.

Solemnly, Rian nodded and sunk his teeth into his lip, an old habit. He wished he could do something more for the loup-garoux, but try as he might, he couldn't think of anything. Rian's family probably wouldn't be too accepting towards Rafe, given the circumstances... and he couldn't exactly march off with him to help him find his parents and sister...
"Do you miss them much?" he inquired softly, perhaps asking a stupid question. He couldn't really decide on what else to say. Usually it was best not to open old wounds and scratch them, but sometimes it is best to talk about the pain of the past to help it heal.

Rafe smoothed out any of the anger lines that may have clouded his youthful face, replacing it with a calm expression full of thought. "Sometimes I miss my mother and sister, but my father would have a heart attack if he knew I'd even still refer to him as such. We weren't real close, since he didn't think me much of a son." A strange, strained chuckle came from his throat as he added, "I wasn't destined for a pack; I was destined to be free."
And he gave just a tiny nod to his own words, smiling at the last word. How wonderful it had tasted on his tongue, and how long he had wished to speak it. All alone, free, yet not truly isolated. There was still a future ahead of him, and he planned it not to be in a cage.

Rian let out a sigh of something like disbelief, though he didn't doubt in Rafe's story or in his opinion on what he called freedom. Rian just found it amazing that Rafe could stand to live so alone... he himself would go crazy, he decided, if he had to leave his family and friends and take on life as a nomad. Of course, he was a Prince. Not that it made any difference. Rian was ashamed that he had even thought of that like it actually mattered.
"I don't really know if I'm free," Rian spoke up, sounding slightly bemused. "I can go out for walks and stuff but a lot of the time I'm confined to my house." 'Usually when I haven't cleaned my room yet,' he added silently.

"I do not think I could stay within a building for a long period of time. It makes me feel almost like a claustrophobic. Sitting still is a problem for me, too," he said sheepishly, looking down at his twitching foot that urged him to start pacing to ease it. "I get nervous when I stay still long, too. Sorry if it bothers you."
Rafe shook out his ebony hair, a random habit that he did often. The charm on his collar clinked, the spikes glimmering in the faint light that skidded through the canopy of emerald leaves. The day was nice, still tepid, only that was hot for Rafe. His body temperature was always over one hundred, due to his breed. Werewolf. He preferred the way he said it more.
