Transferring to a new school is never fun, especially when you don't have any friends and were never popular even in your old school, and you're seventeen, in grade eleven, where everyone knows each other from their head to their toes and you are completely alienated. Carmen Laiho knew this well. Her family was planning on moving soon, and they'd be close to Lincolin, as opposed to the school she had previously attended. For this reason, Carmen's parents had pulled her out of there and plopped her down in Lincolin in the middle of the school year with no comforting words other than "You'll be fine" and "Have a nice day, Carma!" as if making it seem like a small deal would change reality. Carmen snorted, blowing her violet bangs out of her face. They needed to be redyed soon. Perhaps she should think about getting a job to pay for her hair expenses.
Hoisting her bag more securely on her back, Carmen glanced around the hallways uneasily. She didn't see much that interested her - just a freshman struggling with his locker and two seniors making out intensely against the wall. She winced. So far, so bad.
Carmen made her way up to the second floor where the secretary had told her her locker was. The number on it read 1078, and it was scratched and scuffed from years of usage. Carmen sighed, wishing she wasn't so alone here. School sucked.

Riven brushed his auburn hair out of his face, a bored sigh emitting from his parted lips. Soon the lone orange streak was covering his orbs while he walked, and he gave up on trying to fix it. No amount of combing or hair gel would ever get his hair to be any less of a mess. It was like this every morning in this wretched school. Why did he even go to this school?
He remembered irritably that it was the closest school to his house, and it wasn't really what you'd call close. But it was horrid, nevertheless. This could be concluded farther as someone shoved him roughly after elbowing him in his right ribcage.
"You want to get your face punched in?" he snarled at the smug looking senior staring down at him. Riven would have liked to shatter a few teeth, as well, the glimmering pearl white things. This was one kid he always had problems with, and always would, as well as have the urge to tear limb from limb.

Carmen was disgusted to notice that her locker had the faint smell of rot in it, explained by the old sandwich way down in the bottom corner. Unfortunately, she did have a locker partner, and worse, she didn't know who they were - but she was quite positive that they had some nasty habits. Carmen wasn't a neat freak herself, but she didn't leave old food in her locker. That was just gross. She hoped they wouldn't get fruit flies in there or something.
After unpacking her bag and taking out her Math binder, for her next class - yuck - Carmen slammed her locker shut and made sure that the dial on the lock was at 0 so nobody could turn it back to the last number and get it open again. That had happened to her once, and someone had stolen some money out of her bag that she had had for after-school purposes. Carmen knew better now.
She thought she heard a commotion a little further on - right down the hallway that she had to take, as the ever-useful secretary had directed her. Sighing boredly, Carmen dragged herself on, tugging aimlessly on her baggy black hood that doubled as a security blanket. It was so worn - the girls at her old school had hated it - and full of memories that it was comforting to have with her. At least it was familiar.
Two boys - her age or maybe a bit more - were fighting, being egged on by a couple of their apparent friends. Carmen scoffed and rolled her eyes. What a stupid habit - wait.
One of them looked distinctly familiar. Carmen's heart began to race...

"You wanna fight, punk?" the senior sneered, a crowd of students beginning to swarm about, all murmuring. What a familiar sight, it only seemed to happen to him every day. But this day, it was different. Somehow, it just was. Then he glanced around the gathering people and noticed one in particular: A girl.
However, the senior noticed her, too, and snorted. "You like her, kid? Huh, do ya? Hey, girl!" the bastard called over to her, and now Riven was really growing pissed. If that was Carmen, he was going to break this idiots face being for being so disrespectful to her. No one, and he truly meant no one, called her "girl."
He would be happy if this was Carmen. It would save him the embarrassment of being teased when he had a girlfriend if he thought another girl was his girlfriend. But I didn't think Carmen went to this school... His heart began sloping as he realized how many rumours would spread and get around to Carmen..

Leave him the fuck alone, Carmen snarled, striding over to the scene. And don't even think about calling me that. She was too dazed to say much more and too surprised by the thought of Riv being there to act, but it was definitely possible. He had never mentioned what school he attended - why couldn't it be Lincolin?
She caught his eye, timidly, searchingly, but there was still love in her gaze, as there always would be when Carmen looked at Riv. Come on, she muttered. Let's go. There was talking to be done.

"You have a little protector here, Rivvy?" taunted the senior, but Riven shoved him hard, causing him to tumble backward into a mass of kids that had formed around them. Laughter erupted from the ones the guy hadn't fallen on, and Riven strode nearer to Carmen.
Locking eyes with the senior, Riven growled a statement to him, "Shut up, and leave her alone if you don't want to lose more than your dignity." Then he turned to Carmen, peering into her eyes that he hadn't seen in what seemed an eternity. He nodded to her and waited for her lead, since he hadn't any idea where she was going and doubted she wanted to talk with all these gossips around.

Carmen laughed appreciatively, watching the senior fall onto a ton of other kids. He deserved that for making fun of Riv. "I mean, Rivvy? What the hell is his problem?" Carmen took one last look at him, committing his face to memory for future reference - though it wasn't as if she could do much to him. She had tough words, but she was just a girl who wasn't in the best shape and didn't have much experience with defending herself.
Come on, Carmen whispered, stealing away off in the other direction, where she had originally come from. When they were by her locker, she checked around to make sure nobody was there - luckily, most people were anticipating the bell by now and near their classrooms, or leaving the school to skip - and took both of Riv's hands in hers. I didn't know you went here... I had no idea. We're moving, so my parents decided to put me in this school instead.

A smile coursed along his lips. "Looks like we'll be seeing each other move often," he said, unable to hide the excitement from his tone, though he tried to keep it down so the teachers wouldn't hear him. He placed a kiss on her cheek, but had to pull away almost as soon as they touched her skin. One could never been too sure when a teacher would pop up -- and they gave you hell about kissing in the hallways or even holding hands.
"Oh, Carmen... it feels more like and eternity since I saw you last," Riven murmured, letting his eyes fall to the gleaming tile floor. "If I could stay with you this entire time, I would... but I think your parents hate me enough with stealing you away times before." His eyes trailed up to give her an innocent stare from under his bangs.

Carmen brought herself up to her full height and kissed his lips gently, not making the kiss last too long, but not too short, either. I don't care what my parents think, she murmured. They're ignorant and they don't know what you're really like, but I do. I love you, Riv.
Suddenly Lincolin didn't seem that bad after all. Riv was there, and with any luck they'd have at least a couple classes together - but even if they didn't, there was still other times of the day to see each other, and the prospect of that could be the glue holding Carmen together for the day as long as Riv would enter into her time sooner or later.

"I love you too, Carmen," he whispered back to her. "What class do you have for first block?" With any luck, they'd have that and lunch together. If not, hopefully lunch. Or, if she was unlucky enough to have gym this semester, there was a chance they'd have that together. He was sure that wasn't a class she enjoyed much, maybe less than actually being in school.
The clock on the wall ticked away the minutes. Soon, the warning bell would ring and students would have to hurry along to class before the security guards caught them and gave them lunch detention or other horrible punishments they had, all about as bad as listening to your science teacher go on forever about his life.

I have Math, she replied, wrinkling her nose, which I hate, but I guess there isn't much I can do about that. I think I know how to find the room... but I already don't like it much here, she confessed. It seems kind of grim and eerie somehow. Maybe that's just me.
Carmen winced as the shrill and alarming bell went off, causing people to head for their classrooms. She had always hated that noise. It was like the people who designed bells made them as annoying as possible out of pure spite. Where are you going first? she asked, hoping it was Math, but she doubted it somehow.

"I'm in Science. It might be the one across from your Math class, though. And even if it isn't I'll walk with you anyway, this school isn't all that friendly at times. People like jumping out from inside and behind lockers and scaring you into dropping your stuff." His hand found its way around hers, giving it a light squeeze.
"I'm sure they might be in a bit of a shock over you for the meantime, though," he told her with a wink. He then bowed, asking her, "May I accompany thee in thees quest to the room of Math?" The green strip had already encompassed his eye, making them two different hues as he straightened and glanced to her.

Yeah, I got that impression, too, Carmen admitted, chewing on the inside of her cheek. She wasn't one to be overly paranoid or scared of things that might never happen, but the school still made her uneasy. Then again, she was with Riv and he'd make sure she was safe. Of course he would. There was no reason to be scared if Riv was there for her.
Carmen chuckled. Of course. She pressed his hand in response and the two began walking back down the hallway.

"Once the bell rings I'll bolt out the door and be out to meet you. Besides, it's such a big school, you can get so lost... " It wasn't really hard to get around, unlike how he was describing. All it was was an excuse to walk her to all her classes and possibly beat the hell out of anyone who dared try to come after her.
School. It was the last place anyone ever wanted to be. Right now, however, it was looking a bit better than what it usually was. With Carmen there, at least maybe he'd try a bit harder to stay out of trouble.

( AWWWW @ FIRST PARAGRAPH! )
Carmen nodded gratefully. Thanks. Getting lost would be a bad idea. Should we meet somewhere? Then again... I'd probably end up losing myself on my way to the meeting place, she added, slightly flustered. Carmen was no great shakes with direction or maps or geography, and she expected that it would take her a while before she got used to the mechanics of this school, from the layout of it to the classes to how the social ladder worked, though usually there were at least a few similarities between the hierarchies of most high schools.
This is it, right? Carmen questioned when they came to one of the doors that she was pretty sure was the same one that secretary had shown her. She knew she had to go in sooner or later and that it was good to get the first class over with, but there was something holding her back. Carmen didn't want to go in without Riv, even though she had to.
