Carmen gave a sigh, squinting up at the bright sunlight that streamed down in hot rays. She hated this time of day. It was too warm, and everyone was out, walking around, enjoying life. Carmen Angeline Laiho did not like strangers.
She didn't really like anyone. Except, she thought with a smile, a certain boy whom she was waiting for. Rivenborn.. Riv. Every time she heard footsteps rounding the corner, Carmen would straighten up and look anxiously, expectantly, at where the noise was coming from. She so wanted to see him.
Carmen had exchanged some of her ill-fitting clothes for a pair that were a little more baggy at home. She wore dark blue jeans and a long purple shirt that matched her bangs and displayed the tattoo of an azure vaze, shattered in pieces, on her upper arm, around her shoulder area.
She let out another sigh, beginning to grow impatient. It was slightly odd that she had been waiting for almost forty-five minutes for someone she reminded herself she hardly knew, but that was too bad.

"And detention once again," Riven sighed as he dashed down the streets, dodging people on the way. That stupid math teacher. So he was making the lead of his pencil snap and fly at the backs of students' heads. There was nothing wrong with that. He finally skidded to a halt in the square, voids scanning over the area and hand buried in his jeans pocket. The small device should be a good gift, he believed. Soon his eyes landed on Carmen and he hurried over, knowing he was late and trying to hide the fact he was out of breath from her as he walked up. "Hey," he said once he was a few paces away from her.

"Hi," she said with a grin, glad that he had arrived. She didn't mind that he was late, really. Carmen herself was always late for things. She was just satisfied that he had showed up. The previous night she had ran through scenarios in her brain that consisted of her waiting hours and hours and Riv standing her up- not because he was cruel, but just because she was nervous and incredulous that someone actually wanted to spend time with her. "It's good to see you again."

"Good to see you again, too," he said with a grin, then remembered his gift for her. "Oh, by the way..." Riven took the device he had out of his pocket, took her hand and placed it on her palm. When he let go of it, it was clear to see that it was a new mp3 player. It had taken him a while to get up the eighty dollars for it, and also find a store that carried them, but he eventually had. Now he was just hoping she'd like it, though he had no doubt she would, seeing how she reacted to losing her other one.

For a split second Carmen just blinked at him, then stared down at the little machine. She couldn't believe it was real. Was this a hallucination, like everything in the desert except the sand was? Could it actually be true? She touched it lightly with her finger and confirmed her desires that it wasn't a lie or some strange sort of dream.
"Thank you, Riv," she said, beaming more than she had in years and calling him by that name for the first time out loud. Before she could stop herself, she had enfolded her arms around him in a smothering hug. "Thank you." This meant that she could practice singing with confidence again.
Carmen didn't really approve of hugs, since she considered herself too heavy to practically throw herself at a poor, unsuspecting soul, but this was different. She was too grateful not to.

"Whoa!" he cried, chuckling and hugging her back. "You're welcome." A weight lifted off his heart, that fragile organ that is all too many times shattered-- mostly by little crushes or by love affairs, but that's what people get. Riven was happy to see her so excited and completely forgot about work. But if he got fired it'd be a good excuse to get a better job, anyway.

"This is awesome," she said with an ecstatic grin. "I can't practice without one of these, seeings as my brother stole my CD player and threw it out the window a couple years ago.. thanks so much, I don't know how to repay you."

"You don't need to," Riven told her, giving her a warm smile. "I'd like to hear you sing something, though, if you wouldn't mind...," he added with a wink, never before having seen someone so joyous over one thing. It was wonderful-- simply fantastic.

"Oh, I wouldn't mind," she replied, surprised at what was coming out of her mouth. "I can't guarantee that you'll like my style, though," she said, looking up at him. In all truth, nothing would hurt Carmen more than if Riv didn't like her singing.

"We'll just have to see if I do, then," he stated, still smiling at her and ignoring the confused looks they got as people pushed past them. The clock that was embedded in steel in the center of the square chimed out four o' clock, and Riven realized he was going to be late for work-- again. "Want to walk with me on my way to work?" he asked, a hopefulness to his voice.

"Sure." She smiled to herself as they started to walk, thinking that nothing could crush her happiness at this point. She had a new mp3 player that still had years of life on it- and proof that Riv wasn't standing her up or using her or something stupid like that.
But when she saw the group of teenagers coming from the opposite direction, well.. that just about crushed her happiness. "Oh, no.."

Hearing her words, he looked to her while they walked. "What's wrong?" he asked, glancing the the direction she was looking at. The group caught his eye and he cocked an eyebrow, and irritation rose in his veins as the teenagers got closer, for some reason, making his left eye begin its change to a jade hue.

She shook her head slightly. "Nothing, they're just kids from school.. maybe if I ignore them, they'll ignore me.. or maybe they won't recognize me or something." And maybe that's just wishful thinking.
One of the girls- a tall, wavy-haired blond with green eyes- raised a perfectly plucked eyebrow in their direction. Carmen saw her say something to her friends, and they laughed loudly. She felt her face burn with anger and dreaded the fact that she knew how to lip read, as the girl had said, I think that's Car. Guess those tight tops attracted somebody after all.
And they laughed because they knew the prospect was ridiculous. Carmen understood that, in a way..

"They give you problems often?" he asked, eyes flashing at the wavy-haired girl that had spoken. Riven's left eye turned bright emerald as the agitation in his blood reached a new height: his urge to be protective of her. And that group of people, well, they were just really plucking at his nerves and making them raw.

"Very often," Carmen replied, catching the eye of one of the older boys and glancing away. She could deal with taunting from the girls, but for some reason, the guys always freaked her out a lot more. She bit her lip as the approached, knowing that one of the group would probably stop them as they passed by..
