"You really have been picked on," he muttered quietly, registering her words in his mind. Riven wanted to hold her, to embrace her and whisper how must he loved her and how much she meant to him, even though he hadn't known her more than a day, if even that long. Around them car horns blared to be given service and ally cats darted across the roofs of the work shops, the aroma of unleaded gasoline thick in the air. It wasn't really a place to be standing and talking. "We should go somewhere else to talk," he told her the moment he saw MaluVu poking around, looking for him no doubt. MaluVu would already be having his head for skipping work, he didn't need him to hurt Carmen, too.

She managed her most brave smile. "Yeah, I guess." She nodded at his next words, seeing Riv's brother turn a corner, approaching fast. "Where should we go?" She was thinking of the desert, but there were other places- though the desert might be closest.

"We can think about that while we flee from Mal. He never really got over his anger issues after getting shoved through a windshield." Riven took her hand quickly and led her away until the reached the small cluster of trees that somehow survived living all the way out here. Then, looking around, he saw no MaluVu, and sighed relief.

"Well, I'd imagine that would be painful," Carmen muttered, walking with Riv until they reached a place that was apparently the safe zone. "It must be difficult living with him."

"Actually that's sort of why I don't go home often," Riven admitted. He was all too used to staying out all night because he knew he'd get his head bashed in if he went home and faced his dearest brother. "I sort of got the idea after nearly getting my skull busted open, and..." he stopped and stared down at the spot were his tattoo would be if his jeans weren't hiding it. The memory flashed before his open eyes.
"You did what?!" MaluVu exclaimed, the chase beginning. Riven's older brother had his eyes on the skull tattoo on Riven's leg. It didn't take long before he caught him. "Mal!" Riven had struggled against his brother only to get his leg scrapped across something sharp and metal, blood spilling from the wound diagonally implanted over the mark of a black skull. "What's what you get, Rivenborn, that's what you get," MaluVu growled, walking away.

Carmen nodded with understanding, even though she knew she wouldn't be able to grasp exactly how hard it was for Riv, having never been in his shoes. She touched his arm lightly and sighed, not really knowing how she could help. "I can see why you'd prefer not to be at home.."

Riven took her hand into his once again. "It's alright as long as MaluVu isn't hacked off at something. My younger brother has it worse. MaluVu sort of treats him like a dog on a leash," he explained, but tried to give her a grin. "You have any siblings?"

"Hmm," Carmen said, raising an eyebrow. "And.. uh.. yes, my brother Zemestan, but you wouldn't think so." She frowned. "He spends most of his time up in his room, glued to whatever new video game console my parents bought for him. They don't really support his addiction, but.. well.. his nickname is Storm, if that's any help. He gets really mad if they don't get him what he wants."

Riven cocked an eyebrow. "So they don't do anything, just give him whatever he wants?" The idea was odd to him, because when you wanted something in his household, you got slapped and told you'd have to work hard to support everything in the house then. Plus, no one in his home supported the idea of military except him, though it was a good source of currency.

"Pretty much." She blew out a tired and angry sigh. "He doesn't do anything.. all he has to do is throw a tantrum, which he is much to old for, and they'll bend to his every will." Carmen threw Riv a small smile. "But that's life, I guess." Even if most of the time life is unfair..

"Yeah. Can't ignore the harder points of it," he mumbled, then gazed up at the sidewalk close by. Riven heard someone walking on it, and it sounded as if they were getting closer. It wasn't often he came here, but usually the street beside it was empty.

"Car! Hey, Car!"
Carmen closed her eyes and gave a nasal sigh, but turned around. She recognized that voice; it had to be Zemestan. No fourteen year old boy she knew had a voice as squeaky and uneven as Zem did.
"What do you want," she asked wearily, folding her arms as Zem's small frame raced up beside her. If she felt like it, she could probably kill him with her bare hands, he was so scrawny, but she'd never do that. She had a hunch her parents liked him.
"Mom and Dad are looking for you, you're supposed to go back." Zem's left eye twitched; a habit he had had ever since he was a baby.
"I don't want to go back," Carmen argued, glancing up at Riv.

Riven twitched at the nickname "Car". It bothered him, for some odd reason, and he glanced from Carmen to Zemestan. The boy sort of reminded him of Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, the main character Victor, who could have been made out of solely twigs. It was surprising it wasn't.

"But you have to come," Zem whined, sounding more like a toddler than a teenager, "or I'll get in trouble." His eye twitched again.
"You know very well that you won't, you brat," Carmen scowled, eyes flashing at his words, "I'm the only one that gets in trouble around here, but very well." She looked at Riv, the hardness in her eyes melting away. "I guess I better get going.."

"Okay," Riven murmured solemnly. "See you tomorrow at the town's square?" He threw a bored, uninterested look at Zem. Riven was never one to become irritated with little kids, but, this one just seemed to cross the line to his irritation. He could tell when his eye throbbed and burned, signaling it was turning emerald once more.
